Shailene Woodley wonders if she gets compared to Jennifer Lawrence because they both “have short hair and a vagina”.
The 22-year-old actress was booed on the The Tonight Show after she said comparisons “always lead to despair” when asked about the Oscar-winner back in March.
The segment was later edited out of the broadcast. But in a new interview with New York Magazine, Shailene admits she was shaken.
“It bothered me, because it’s human nature to feel bad if you are booed by an entire audience,” she explained.
“…I admire Jennifer Lawrence, but she’s everyone’s favorite person to compare me to. Is it because we both have short hair and a vagina? I see us as separate individuals. And that’s important.”
Shailene also expanded on why she thinks it’s important to discuss the problems with comparisons between women. The actress believes it’s harmful to do so, and does a disservice to her fellow females.
“As women, we are constantly told that we need to compare ourselves to a girl in school, to our co-workers, to the images in a magazine. How is the world going to advance if we’re always comparing ourselves to others?” she asked.
“As women, our insecurities are based on all these comparisons,” she later added. “And that creates distress.”
Shailene did famously reach out to Jennifer before taking on her role in the film franchise Divergent, hoping the star would have a few words of advice after completing work on the dystopian franchise that made her a household name: The Hunger Games.
“I asked her advice,” Shailene said, noting some of their less obvious similarities: “I do think we have things in common. We both believe in having fun and still telling the truth. We’re not fashion girls, but we play the game. And we both care deeply about being actors.”
