Vanessa Hudgens says putting on weight for a film was “the easiest and most amazing thing ever”.
The 25-year-old actress play homeless and pregnant teenager Agnes ‘Apple’ Bailey in Gimme Shelter. She had to beef up for the role but has joked it wasn’t a hardship as she was in France at the time, so just munched on croissants.
“Oh my gosh, it was the easiest and most amazing thing ever,” she laughed at a screening of the film in New York City this week, according to People.
“It’s not hard to put on weight in France when you’re eating all the good French food.”
In the film, Apple runs away from her mother who is abusive and tries to hunt down her father. Although she finds him things don’t go to plan, leading to her living on the streets.
Vanessa took the role seriously and researched a great deal. She visited homes where teenagers with problem lives stay and what she saw has stayed with her.
“I would just spend as much time as I could with the girls,” she explained. “I didn’t want to be too intrusive, and then I would just sit outside and work on my script… It was just so nice because I knew I could bounce things off them.”
The movie is a million miles away from the High School Musical franchise which made Vanessa famous. She recently explained why she wanted the part, revealing she thinks it’s important to test herself as much as possible.
“I’m willing to go the extra mile and actually put the work in. It showed me that I’m very dedicated to what I do, which is nice to remind myself of,” she told Collider.
“It made me grow so much in that I’ve been able to look firsthand at what’s going on in the world around me. I feel like I’ve lived a pretty sheltered life growing up and then was in the industry when I was very young.”
