Toni Collette had such a crush on Ralph Macchio when she was young that she “didn’t know where to look” when they worked together.
The 41-year-old actress has always been a huge film fan and 1984’s The Karate Kid was one of her first favorites. She was particularly enamored with its main star Ralph Macchio, who she eventually teamed up with on 2012’s Hitchcock.
“Ralph Macchio in The Karate Kid,” she told People magazine, when asked about her first film star crush. “My room was covered in posters of him. I worked with him in Hitchcock a few years ago. I’m a grown woman, and I still didn’t know where to look.”
Another early movie which had a big effect on the Australian star was 1978’s Grease, which starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. Although it’s best known for its musical numbers, it was the fashion which excited a young Toni.
“Sandy in Grease,” she said, when quizzed on which movie star she most wanted to be. “My mother owned the same red heels that Olivia Newton-John wears to the school fair. I trotted around the house in those shoes forever. It’s a wonder I never broke an ankle.”
There are several pictures which Toni can imagine she will never get bored of. She’s watched Pretty in Pink over and over and still gets deeply affected by one of Dudley Moore’s releases.
“I adore Dudley Moore in Arthur. His relationship with Liza Minnelli’s character is gorgeous. It’s a ridiculously funny film filled with brilliant dialogue and the theme song still makes me melt,” she said.
