Sylvester Stallone found cutting the break lines on a truck Jason Statham was driving a “magical moment”.
The two actors reunite for their roles as Barney Ross (Sylvester) and Lee Christmas (Jason) in action-packed movie The Expendables 3. This time round the group must overcome ruthless arms dealer and the Expendables’ co-founder Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson), who is set on destroying them.
Speaking at a press conference in London to promote the film, Sylvester recalled a behind-the-scenes incident which proved he and the rest of the cast aren’t as macho and manly as they are on screen.
“Jason actually saw death at the bottom of the water. He’s pretty modest about it, he drove a five ton truck 60ft down, because I cut the break line. Nobody knows this. You know what’s so funny, when we were standing around as Jason was drowning I was filming with an iPhone. It’s a bit insensitive but I just thought, this is a magic moment,” Sylvester mused.
“We pull him up. He’s pale and he’s shaking and we go, ‘Oh my God’. We’re all standing around, these Expendables group going, ‘I wouldn’t jump in after him, would you save him?’ ‘Hell no I wouldn’t go in after him. I like the guy but not that much! Are you crazy? Get wet? Nooo. I can’t swim very well.’”
Jason appeared to take the prank in good humor, joking that he’ll “never work with” Sylvester again following the incident.
The latest installment of the franchise sees new additions to the cast including Kellan Lutz as Smilee and Antonio Banderas as the comical character Galgo. Unfortunately for the Spanish star, he managed to hurt himself just after filming kicked off.
“I got an injury the first take that I did in the movie, and it carried on all through filming the movie and I didn’t say anything to anybody because I didn’t want everybody to think I was getting older,” Antonio, 53, sighed. “It was running up the roof to the helicopter, the first shot, I get a pain… and it lasted for a couple of months.”
The Expendables 3 is out in US cinemas on August 11.
