Meryl Streep could drink as much red wine as she wanted on the set of her latest film.
The actress stars as the nasty Violet Weston in August: Osage County, which saw her receive her 18th Oscar nomination this year.
Despite the best actress award going to Cate Blanchett on Sunday, Meryl still thoroughly enjoyed her time filming the drama.
“Oh yes!” she laughed to bild.de when told she looked terrible in the movie.
“I normally avoid alcohol when I’m filming. If I don’t, I look puffy and awful. This time, I could drink as much red wine as I wanted to.”
Violet is part of a dysfunctional family and is always fighting with her husband and children.
Julia Roberts played Meryl’s onscreen daughter, which also earned her an Academy Award nomination.
Despite the rave reviews, Meryl was initially unsure about getting on board.
“Oh no, we have nothing in common!” the 64-year-old said of Violet.
“At first, I didn’t want to take the part. I didn’t know if I wanted to get inside of her head and go to this dark place. The role was tough; I [a non-smoker] had to smoke constantly, I always stank… and Violet is so alone. Her three kids don’t like her. Her husband would rather kill himself than spend time with her…”
In the film, Violet claims that only young women are beautiful.
Meryl agrees that this is the sentiment of today’s culture and claims we live in a “man’s world”.
“When I started in this industry 40 years ago, there were glamorous film stars and character actors,” she explained.
“I decided to be the latter. Today, everyone is judged by their appearance. I am really pleased I’m no longer young and have to start out in this kind of movie industry.”
