Charlie Sheen reportedly asked Piers Morgan to “get hammered” with him moments after declaring his sobriety.
The veteran journalist has penned a new book about interviewing some of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
In newly released extracts from Shooting Straight: Guns, Gays, God and George Clooney obtained by UK newspaper The Mirror, Piers recounts meeting the troubled actor for their CNN interview on February 28 2011.
“In one dramatic moment, when I asked him directly if he was on drugs, he produced his latest laboratory test results, showing full negatives,” Piers writes.
Charlie had just been booted from his hit comedy Two and a Half Men after several highly publicized outbursts.
The journalist claims that while the star seemed forthcoming on air he was still up to mischief when the cameras weren’t rolling.
“What the viewers didn’t see was what happened during the commercial break. Charlie asked for a pen, scribbled on the results paper, and handed it to me. The message read: ‘To Piers – let’s get hammered. Love, Charlie,'” Piers continues.
“I had to laugh. It’s important to keep a proper perspective on the Sheen affair. We’re dealing here with the highest paid man on American TV (£1.1million per episode) who likes to party too much.”
Apparently Charlie left the television host with a few words of wisdom.
He hoped after their conversation his critics would back off and realize there were more important things to worry about than whether or not he consumes illegal drugs.
“‘I wish people would spend more time on their own lives and families and not some distant planet that is me,'” Piers quoted the actor telling him.
The journalist also dishes on his behind-the-scenes conversations with Mickey Rourke and Robert De Niro.
Shooting Straight is scheduled for release on Tuesday.
