Seth MacFarlane: Charlize makes me great

Seth MacFarlane thinks Charlize Theron is “exploding with talent”.

The American funnyman found fame with his hit TV show Family Guy and has since moved onto the big screen.

In his latest film A Million Ways to Die in the West, Seth plays sheep farmer Albert Stark. After gaining the love of a strong woman called Anna (Charlize), Albert sets off to duel with dangerous cowboy Clinch Leatherwood (Liam Neeson).

This marked the first time Seth took on a leading role and he believes his performance was enhanced by the presence of his female co-star.

“I get excited about things that make me nervous. I’ve watched my performance and I’m happy with it, and I credit that entirely to Charlize,” he told ShortList magazine. “One of the things that I have learned over the years is that the quality of your performance depends on what you are getting from the other actor in the scene, and she is someone just exploding with talent. She was just a powerhouse in every way and I am forever in her debt.

“As a rule I would say that I always prefer working with actors to comedians. Good comedy is about the writing, and our style in particular doesn’t need people to gild the lily.”

Seth’s sense of humor has often been criticized, such as his song about women who exposed their breasts on screen during last year’s Oscars ceremony. However, Family Guy has become so popular that those who love the show have gone out of their way to tell him.

“The ones who show up in your house probably fit that bill,” he replied when asked about the most intense reaction he’s had from a Family Guy fan. “[It’s happened] a couple of times. Not fun, but I guess it comes with the territory… I’ve never been to the bottom of the Mariana Trench [in the Pacific Ocean], but I wouldn’t be that surprised if I saw someone wearing a Peter Griffin T-shirt there.”
