Roberts scared of Streep

Julia Roberts was “intimidated” by having to choke Meryl Streep on screen.

The two superstars appear in August: Osage County, which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this week. The movie follows the women in a dysfunctional family who return to Oklahoma, where they were raised, due to a family crisis.

Julia was amazed to hear she would be working with Meryl and was more than a little daunted.

“To work with Meryl is a dream, to know her is an honor — and it was intimidating to have scenes where I’m choking her,” she laughed at a press conference for the release, according to New York Daily News. “It’s not how I pictured [meeting her]. In my mind, I thought we’d be sitting, having tea and speaking in fabulous accents. But it was amazing.”

Meryl has received 17 Academy Award nominations and Julia decided to learn as much from her as possible on set. The actress was relieved to see the icon gives roles her all, with nothing coming that easily.

“I’ve never seen anybody work as hard as Meryl works. She doesn’t just snap her fingers and is suddenly a genius. She’s the hardest-working one in the room, and I was grateful to see that up close,” she explained.

“We worked our asses off. I’ve never worked so hard in my life, and I’ve given birth to three children.”

Toronto has been a hotbed of highly-anticipated movie screening over the last few days. Scarlett Johansson has debuted her release Under the Skin and Clive Owen’s cop drama Blood Ties also premiered. It stars French actress Marion Cotillard too, who had to master a Brooklyn accent for her role.

“I have a Brooklyn Italian accent from that era, which is different from other accents I’ve done,” she explained. “But it helps you get in the character.”
