Denise Richards says her child custody letter should have been private.
The 43-year-old actress penned a note to Los Angeles authorities explaining why she could no longer care for her ex-husband Charlie Sheen’s twin boys with Brooke Mueller.
She had four-year-old twins Max and Bob in her care after their mother Brooke was admitted to rehab for the 21st time, and Denise now reveals lack of privacy has been a challenge to deal with.
“The hardest thing actually was that [the letter] was so public. It was something that could have been dealt with privately. That’s the thing that’s hard because these are minors, they’re kids. I just don’t understand that part of it,” she emotionally told Entertainment Tonight’s Nancy O’Dell.
“It wasn’t like a court document, it wasn’t a declaration. I purposely went that way to write something personal as a mom. I was very upset that something like that would become public.”
Denise married Charlie in 2002 and the couple had two daughters, Sam, nine, and Lola, eight, before divorcing four years later.
Charlie, 48, is now embroiled in a bitter custody battle with Brooke, 36, over their children, who up until recently were living with Denise.
But Denise had to make the decision to give up the boys’ care after their behavior became increasingly violent.
The letter she wrote to the Los Angeles County Department of Children & Family Services advising she could no longer care for them was leaked.
“It’s a shame it ultimately affects the children and not just the boys. It affects our daughters too because they hear things. I am very protective of that,” she said.
