Rhys Meyers: I was wild

Jonathan Rhys Meyers

Jonathan Rhys Meyers didn’t think about responsibility when he was “as wild as you can get”.

The 36-year-old actor’s battle with alcoholism has been well documented. He has completed multiple stints in rehab, been banned from United Airlines for belligerent behavior and in 2011 he was hospitalized after an overdose.

The star is now teetotal and back on the small screen with his TV show Dracula. His life has changed completely and he can’t believe some of the things he got up to in the past.

“I was wild, I was as wild as you can get,” he told British newspaper The Mirror. “When you are on the front of newspapers for stupidity, getting drunk at airports, fighting with cops and stuff like that, you wake up the next day and you can hardly f**king remember it. Responsibility gets diminished.”

One of the worst things for Jonathan is thinking about the effect his behavior had on those around him. He is glad to have a close-knit group of friends who showed him he doesn’t need to drink to be an interesting person.

At the time of his overdose there were conflicting reports about whether it involved pills. Some suggested it had been accidental and while Jonathan will discuss it in part he won’t be completely open about what happened.

“As you get older you see the stupid things you have done. It is not the consequences for yourself but your family get hurt, your friends get hurt,” he said.

“At some point you come to a place – and I was lucky because some of my friends have never got to that place – where I saw it as something that was separate from me. It is kind of insanity to do it to that level. I was able to come to that realization and I look for different things in life now.

“Now I don’t do nothing. Once you make the decision you have had enough of something, the decision is made you have had enough…”
