Michelle Pfeiffer used to live on fizzy drinks and cigarettes.
Unlike many women in Hollywood, the 55-year-old welcomes the ageing process. She feels a lot less stressed now she knows people don’t expect her to look so good, although she wishes she had taken steps to remain healthy earlier in her life.
“Once you get over a certain hump there actually is less pressure. You can begin to look great for your age. You don’t have to look young anymore,” she told Ladies Home Journal.
“I’ve moved over to that other side – I’m 55, which is a little too close to 60, but looking great for my age is OK now.
“I haven’t always been healthy. When I was in my 20s I smoked two packs of cigarettes a day. I lived on Marlboro Lights and Coca-Cola.”
Despite her relaxed attitude, Michelle struggles when seeing herself on the big screen. She claims looking at a blown up version of yourself can “wreak havoc on your psyche”.
The star raises two children with her husband David E. Kelley and took some time out from work when they were growing up. They are now both at college so she is concentrating on her career – although she still worries she could lose it all.
“I still think I’m going to be fired in the first week of every new job I take,” she said. “Always. In fact, before I even start a movie I’ll try to get myself fired or think of a reason I should quit. I guess it’s fear of failure.”
