Perry: I don’t bash exes

Katy Perry doesn’t like to “point the finger” at her exes in songs.

The 29-year-old is currently promoting her latest album, Prism, and admits the songwriting process can be emotionally wrenching.

While she confesses to taking a look at herself and her past loves while penning new track Unconditionally, Katy said she tries to come from an empathetic point of view.

“I think that I’m not always trying to point the finger. I think on this record, the whole Prism record, it’s very self-reflective and you hear that I’ve kind of gone inside more so and looked at where I can make myself better, did a patchwork thing, rather than like ‘Screw you. You’re crazy. F**k you,’” she told MTV First.

The Firework singer has a lot to say on the topic of ending relationships. She divorced Russell Brand in 2012 after a short marriage following a whirlwind courtship, and is currently dating John Mayer.

The reflective star said she thinks it’s important to be mature about ending a romance, and believes that shows in the lyrics to another song, called It Takes Two.

“…It’s really easy when relationships end to be like ‘That guy was a f**king douchebag,’” she said. “But really if you laid it down, and you saw the whole span of the relationship, you saw that you were in love, you saw the intimate moments, you saw the pain, you saw all the emotions and you have to kind of say ‘Well, what responsibility can I take for myself in all of this.’”

Katy’s latest album hit shelves in October.
