Julianne Moore was terrified when she learnt she was having a son.
The 52-year-old actress and her husband Bart Freundlich have 15-year-old Caleb and 11-year-old Liv together. Motherhood has enriched Julianne’s life, although she was initially terrified about welcoming her son.
“I was really female-identified. I just wasn’t sure how to have a boy,” she explained to the December edition of UK InStyle magazine.
“When you are young they’re always holding your hand. Suddenly you turn around and it’s not happening any more.”
Even the couple’s daughter is growing up quickly. This year Liv attended a camp for young people and Julianne was amazed by how independent she already is.
“She was shooing us away. She kept saying, ‘Mom just leave! And don’t cry,'” she recalled.
The actress tries to be honest with her children at all times and teaches them about the positive and negative parts of her career. She recalled chatting to Liv after a photoshoot of her had been published, which prompted her daughter to say the picture looked nothing like her.
“I explained to her that the image was the result of all these people working together to make it look like that,” she laughed.
Julianne hopes to show her daughter that anything is possible when she grows up. The actress’ career is going from strength to strength as she prepares to promote her movies Carrie and Don Jon and she doesn’t hold with complaining about the roles available for older women.
“I feel very much in the middle of my life: being in a relationship for 17 years and really enjoying work,” she said. “I can’t complain. I’ve been pretty lucky. And I think the more we talk about it, the more we make it real. I hate being asked about this stuff! Let’s appreciate where we are. Let’s not wish our lives away.”
