Melissa McCarthy is “crazy about” Lena Dunham.
The 43-year-old actress is known for her roles in funny movies Bridesmaids, The Heat and hit sitcom Mike & Molly. Melissa has a great deal of respect for fellow females in the comedy business and cites Lena as someone she admires.
“The more I watch Girls the more I realize I’m crazy about Lena Dunham,” the star gushed to advocate.com. “She’s my girl crush. She’s smart, funny, confident, and she isn’t afraid to look awkward. She’s exactly who she is, take it or leave it. Nothing’s more charming than someone who doesn’t take herself too seriously.”
Along with her humorous reputation Melissa is also admired by the gay community, who supported her when she started as a stand-up comedian in New York City. Asked whether they can take credit for helping get her discovered, the brunette actress was happy to share the recognition.
“For sure. They accepted me as a woman trying to be a man who’s trying to be a woman. I wanted to be a drag queen so badly. I’ll bet I still own more wigs than any drag queen – I love me a wig,” she laughed.
“When I left [LA improv and sketch comedy troupe] the Groundlings, I had about 63. I also keep all my wigs from movies. I’ve donated a lot to Groundlings, but at any given time I probably have about 25 wigs.”
Melissa’s love for drag led her to dress up as renowned artist Divine, real name Harris Glenn Milstead, who passed away in 1988. After this move she thinks her status as a gay icon should be set in stone.
“I should at least get some sort of membership card, right? Yeah, I think I’m in the club for life,” she smiled.
