Matt LeBlanc felt “stung” by jibes about his weight.
The former Friends star plays himself in TV show Episodes and said from the start that he was happy for the producers to poke fun at him. However, a storyline about him piling on the pounds affected him more than others.
“The stuff we did last year about me getting overweight — that all really happened,” he revealed to British newspaper The Sun.
“I was at a hotel, and I was overweight. I was lying on a chaise, and I thought it was all private.
“This guy was in the pool and he had a gym bag and a two-year-old son with him.
“He picks his son out of the water, sits him on the edge of the pool, opens his gym bag, takes out his camera and fires across the pool at me. It was on the front page of the National Enquirer the next day.
“The headline was Beached Male. That stung a little. There was another that said Fat LeBlanc. That was clever, I thought.”
While on Friends, Matt was known for playing ladies’ man Joey Tribbiani. The 46-year-old understands that his sex symbol status couldn’t last forever, but also that any negative press will blow over.
“Fortunately, there are a lot of people to pick on. So if one week they’re picking on you, the next week they forget all about you and move on to someone else,” he reasoned.
“It’s part of the ups and downs of Hollywood. So it doesn’t really matter.”
Matt says his former co-stars – Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry and Lisa Kudrow – love the show because it makes fun of him. He also revealed that they would “probably” be up for a cameo on Episodes.
Friends is often mentioned in the comedy series and Matt believes its popularity will prevail, despite the final episode airing back in 2004.
“There’s a whole new generation of kids discovering it, so if anything, it’s ramping up again,” he smiled.
