Lupita Nyong’o has a surprising hobby.
The award-winning actress, known for her role in 12 Years a Slave, showed off her hairstyling skills in a video by Vogue. Lupita started braiding hair as an undergrad at Hampshire College and continued as a grad student at Yale School of Drama.
“I decided it was going to be my side hustle. I was going to make some money braiding people’s hair,” Lupita told Vogue. “So I went to the great troubles of creating a poster, but I just didn’t have the heart to charge anyone.”
Instead Lupita braided hair for her friends on the weekends and in class to stay awake during lectures. Lupita’s passion for braiding started when she couldn’t find a good place to get her own hair done. So the actress spent a summer learning from her aunt how to do braiding like a professional hairdresser.
“For me braiding hair is an intimate thing,” Lupita said. “It’s getting up close and personal and I like to do it for people I know and love and trust.”
Lupita revealed to the magazine that she likes to surround herself with friends who aren’t afraid to have fun.
“I think I’m just attracted to people who are honest and expressive,” she shared. “I like playful people as well, people who are not afraid of their inner child.”
The actress has had the year of a lifetime, bagging an Oscar for her role in 12 Years a Slave and becoming the face of Lancôme. She’s now celebrating her first Vogue cover, appearing on the US edition of the glossy in a purple patterned dress. Lupita has also been confirmed to star in Star Wars: Episode VII, which is out next year.
