Rob Lowe says his children are normal because he didn’t raise them in Los Angeles.
The actor and wife Sheryl Berkoff have been married for 23 years and have two children – sons Matthew, 20, and Owen, 18.
According to Rob, his kids are very down to earth, and he attributes their nature to his and Sheryl’s decision to move them out of LA at a young age.
“You have to be willing to make some sacrifices,” Rob told People magazine.
“I moved my kids out of Los Angeles, immediately. I’ve lived in Santa Barbara for 20 years almost. I’ve had my picture taken there three times.”
This meant Rob had to commute for two hours every day to be on set for his hit show Parks and Recreation. But it’s clear the star didn’t mind having to go back and forth for work.
“Show business is actually my job and my kids truly see it as my job,” Rob said. “Every once in awhile they get flabbergasted that I’m famous. They’re like, ‘Dad! You know Jim Carrey?’ Truthfully, they don’t get it. Not everybody is in show business where my kids grew up, and they see that the world is so much bigger than that.”
Rob recently spoke out about feeling sympathetic towards Justin Bieber, who is close in age to his sons.
According to Rob, Justin has no real support from his fans and is under immense pressure because of his fame.
“I have tremendous empathy,” Rob told Oprah Winfrey. “He makes really good music, he does, but I think he knows the dark secret, and the dark secret is 80 per cent of his audience doesn’t give a sh*t about the music. And he knows it. It bums him out. They care about lemming-think, and their girlfriends and who’s oohing and aahing and screaming. It has nothing to do with what he’s doing as an artist.”
