Lea Michele says her late boyfriend Cory Monteith would want her to help others.
The 27-year-old actress spoke to Elle magazine for their December issue, in her first US magazine interview following the tragedy.
Lea admits Cory is still on her mind and she often thinks about what he would want from the situation.
“I know that Cory would want nothing more than for me to take this situation and use it to help people. I don’t know if I will. I don’t know how,” Lea emotionally recounted to Elle.
Cory was found dead at the age of 31 in a Vancouver hotel room in July. According to the coroner’s report he died from a mixed drug toxicity, consisting of heroin and alcohol.
Since his death Lea, who also co-starred with Cory as his on-screen girlfriend in the hit TV series Glee, resumed her work duties and grieved with the rest of the cast of Glee.
“Now that I’m in this position, you can choose to rise, which is what I’m going to try to do. It’s very hard and you have to be very strong to come out of this alive,” she explained.
“But I think by doing the best for myself, by showing that you don’t have to lose yourself, maybe someone else will feel some sort of strength or comfort.”
Lea openly reflected on how hard the last few months have been, but she has been praised by Glee creator Ryan Murphy for her strength throughout the heart-breaking situation
Lea credits Kate Hudson for helping her through the tragic loss of Cory, as it was Kate who opened her doors to a grieving Lea in the days that followed the shock death.
“I called her and said ‘I don’t know where I’m going to go because my house is swarmed [with reporters].’ She was like, ‘Oh, you’re going to stay at my house.’ Like it was nothing,” she recalled.
“She let my family stay there, and any of my friends. She made sure that in the refrigerator were my favorite juices. I’ll never really be able to thank her, truly, for what she did for me.”
