Lea Michele used to be viewed as “crazy” because she expected wine at the dinner table as a teenager.
The Glee actress has just launched her book Brunette Ambition, which shares her experiences in life, from beauty tips to advice on inner strength.
During an appearance on Chelsea Lately, Lea was quizzed on an admission in the book where she addresses drinking. She explains how she doesn’t need to remove alcohol from her life as she’s been sipping it since she was a youngster, which she was quick to clarify on the talk show.
“It makes me seem crazy!” Lea laughed. “I’m Italian, so at the dinner table it would be like Pellegrino, a jug of soda and a huge thing of wine. Everyone was just drinking wine, like it was part of what you would have along with your dinner. Growing up, I’d be having dinner with my boyfriend and his parents and I’d be like, ‘Where’s the wine? Pass the wine.’ At like 17! And they’re like, ‘This girl’s crazy.'”
The 27-year-old continued to recall how her parents, who met in a playground when they were just 13, would let alcohol flow freely over a meal. While some may view this as odd, Lea feels it taught her a lesson and she never got drunk from the wine.
“When they make it so you can have it, then you don’t want it,” she added. “It’s when they’re like, ‘You can’t have this,’ kids are like, ‘We gotta get that booze.'”
Host Chelsea Handler also brought up a piece in the book where Lea reminisces about meeting a manager at a young age. The actress and her family were shocked when the woman suggested plastic surgery as a means to become popular.
“Yeah they were pretty crazy. She was like, ‘How old are you?’, and I said 13, and she said, ‘Great, as soon as you turn 15 it’s time for a nose job,'” Lea recalled. “We were like, ‘OK, we’re out of here.’ Obviously I didn’t get it done.”
