Kiefer Sutherland confesses that Jack Bauer is “p**sed off”.
The American actor is back playing his most famous screen incarnation, crime-fighting terrorist agent Jack who has saved the world on numerous occasions in 24.
After a four-year hiatus, fans of the double Golden Globe-winning thriller series are overjoyed that it’s back on the small screen. While the show’s premise hasn’t changed, the location has moved across the pond to London with hero Jack toughened by his past experiences.
“He’s harder now. He’s estranged from his country and family. He’s been branded a criminal and had to hide underground for four years. He’s incredibly p**sed off, he’s lonely… and he’s not drinking,” Kiefer mused to British newspaper Metro.
Kiefer has played the role of one of TV toughest guy since the show launched 13 years ago. He bagged the Golden Globe for best actor at the 2002 awards ceremony, but confesses some people don’t get why he enjoys the part so much.
“I have other actor friends who said, ‘I don’t know how you did that for eight years.’ And I would try to explain and say, ‘Well, the character is constantly changing, he’s moving. It’s not a stationary target. It’s not like doing the same play for eight years,’” he divulged.
Moving the backdrop to London added a further appeal for 47-year-old Kiefer to return and also meant that iconic British actor Stephen Fry landed a role, taking on the part of the Prime Minister.
“It’s exotic to us, and iconic. You stand beside the Thames, and that’s where the boats went out to fight the Spanish. A lot has happened up and down that river over the past thousand years,” Kiefer said.
With a movie career spanning more than 30 years, Kiefer has a varied fan base that have supported him through his many projects, but none more so then 24.
“I’ve made some hundred movies, a few them very successful, but I’ve never experienced anything close to the support and excitement that I have from 24,” he smiled. “But with that comes a huge responsibility. I won’t lie, I’m anxious about coming back – I want it to be the best that it can be.’
