Kerry Washington is “proud” to be the center of Scandal.
The 37-year-old actress plays leading lady Olivia Pope in the hit TV series, which has gained a mass following since its debut in 2012.
Prior to her part on the small screen Kerry had roles in big films such as Ray and Django Unchained, but found Scandal offered her something other projects didn’t.
“It’s exciting to be at the center of the story and I’m proud to [be] part of something as a woman who is her own woman, not as an accessory or as someone’s wife,” she explained to British newspaper Metro.
“She’d bold, brilliant, complicated. But you need far more than three words: she’s fierce and ferocious, loyal and very aware of herself. She’s a great character to play.”
Scandal is now into its fourth series and Kerry has no regrets about her decision to get involved. However, the star does admit to some doubts before she took on the job.
“Yes I did [have doubts]. At first I thought: why would I want to do a TV show, I have a flourishing move career?” she recalled. “But it’s so rare that we see women on top of the story that the more I read of the scripts, the more I was hooked into it.”
Two famous fans of the programme, about a White House Communications Director, are US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. But Kerry doesn’t think politics would ever be the life for her.
“I don’t see that happening. I loved working in an appointed position on a presidential committee but running for political office and being part of a campaign and having to put on an electoral front…” she added. “I don’t think so. I face enough possibilities of rejection as an actress.”
