Kerry Washington puts mental health first

Kerry Washington stays grounded by prioritizing her mental health.

The 36-year-old actress has a string of career successes under her belt.

She is the star of hit US television drama Scandal and was cast in Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar-winning feature Django Unchained.

She credits her mental clarity with helping her to achieve her wildest dreams.

“The big decision I made in the last two years was to make sure I put my own mental health and wellness very high on the list of priorities,” Kerry told Entertainment Weekly.

“The truth is, I just don’t think it’s ever about one decision. I think making a commitment to try to make good decisions on a regular basis is probably the best decision I could have made.”

The actress explained her inner calm comes from accepting less-than-optimal outcomes.

She recalled being recast on a television show, which was not named.

Kerry said she was “unbelievably devastated” at the time.

Eventually she accepted what appeared to be a career failure had meaning. She realizes now life isn’t “a roller-coaster ride that only goes up”.

“Down the line, in that window that I would have been doing the show, I had the opportunity to do a movie that really changed my career,” she explained.

“I feel that what’s meant to be yours is meant to be yours, and what isn’t, isn’t. I can’t think of a time when I really, really wanted something and didn’t get it and then saw it and thought, ‘I would have been better.’

Kerry is now able to enjoy the ups and downs of her career.

That includes her biggest successes, and her setbacks.

“The ride is going to be what it’s supposed to be, and it’s going to be a blast,” she said.
