Julie Bowen’s parenting methods sometimes leave her children “tantrums-on-the-ground-twice-a-day unhappy”.
The Modern Family actress raises Oliver, six, and four-year-old twins John and Gustav with husband Scott Phillips.
Julie takes a no-nonsense approach to juggling her career and motherhood – even if it means upsetting her children in the process.
“[I’ve learned that] being your kids’ best friend is not always the best parenting choice,” she admitted in an interview with Working Mother magazine.
“It’s not about everybody being happy all the time. It’s about setting limits. In my house that makes my kids very unhappy, like tantrums-on-the-ground-twice-a-day unhappy. But the limits are set.”
Julie feels lucky to have such a flexible work schedule on her hit TV show. The 43-year-old star prefers to spend time with her family when she’s not tied up with her acting commitments.
“My schedule at Modern Family is fantastic, so I didn’t have to give up much. But I’m discovering that my kids now notice more when I’m gone, that they want more time and attention,” she explained.
“So I shorten trips to a bare minimum or just don’t go at all.”
Julie also feels privileged to have her work-from-home husband around to offer a strong support system.
“He writes software, so he has an office in our house. Essentially he’s always there for the kids, even when he’s off-duty and the door is closed and he’s working,” she gushed. “He’s definitely the element of consistency our children need. He is amazing!”
