Johnny Depp: I’m glad I made 50

Johnny Depp says it would’ve been “drag” not to make it to 50.

The actor entered a new decade in June, but doesn’t worry about ageing. He is simply happy to be in good health and still alive and kicking.

“If you keep your curiosity in life, and stay fascinated, I think it keeps you young beyond numbers,” Johnny explained during an interview with UK newspaper The Independent. “Well, it could be worse; I could not have turned 50. Now that would be a real drag.”

Johnny used to revel in his reputation as a Hollywood hell raiser. However, the star has now ditched his wild ways and is focused on being a good role model to his two children with former partner Vanessa Paradis. He has no intention of going off the rails again.

“I think my midlife crisis happened at 19 or 20 years old. But I don’t think we have a long enough piece of paper to name the things I inflicted upon myself during my midlife crisis, but I will say it was called self-medicating,” he revealed.

Johnny has carved out a successful career by portraying a series of quirky roles in movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lone Ranger, Alice in Wonderland and Edward Scissorhands.

He admits to never watching his own films, and feels shocked by his continued popularity.

“In Hollywood, I’ve always just done whatever I’ve done and still feel lucky to be in the game, without having to play the game too much,” he said. “Truly. I am just amazed that I still get jobs. I am shocked.”

The Hollywood heartthrob may be one of the most famous faces in the world, but he still manages to step out without attracting attention. Johnny has mastered the art of using different disguises to transform his appearance.

“I’m used to living like a fugitive now, so it doesn’t really matter. Anonymity? I remember it, but it ain’t there no more,” he smiled.

“I have actually worn ridiculous things to be able to go out in public now and again. You know, you glue on a fake nose and a ZZ Top beard, bandana over your head, and you just look like a weathered roadie.”
