Jennifer Hudson has never consumed alcohol.
The 32-year-old singer-and-actress stars in upcoming movie The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete, in which she portrays a drug addict called Mom Gloria.
She appeared on Chelsea Lately this week, where she was quizzed on how she prepared for the role.
“It’s great because you play a heroin addict, which is the only drug I’ve never tried. You’ve never done heroin?” host Chelsea Handler asked her.
Jennifer replied: “I’ve never done anything, so that was hard to play this role. I’ve never had a drink in my life. I’m sober. I’m like, ‘OK, this is new to me.’ Normally as an actor, you have things to pull from. I was like, ‘I don’t know what it’s like to feel any of that.’”
Chelsea was stunned by her guest’s admission. The host is known for her love of partying and has even written a book called Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea.
“What do you mean you’ve never had a drink? What are you waiting for?” she laughed.
“I don’t know,” Jennifer considered. “I’ve never been interested. Nobody ever believes it… When I got this role, I was like, ‘Oh my god, what am I gonna do? What am I gonna pull from to play the role?’”
The star visited a rehab center to talk to people who were battling addiction. It helped her to hear their stories, even though she was astounded by some of the “unbelievable” tales.
“They took me through each and every step of what it’s like of how you get addicted to drugs and what it feels like when you are high. She told me it was like an orgasm. I was like, ‘I could do that part!’” Jennifer giggled.
