James McAvoy admits he was a complete “mess” while filming Filth.
The 35-year-old Scottish actor portrays a junkie cop named Bruce in the forthcoming drama.
But playing a sex-crazed drug addict onscreen didn’t come easy for James, as he put his body through the ringer in order to depict his character accurately.
“I was drinking a lot more than I usually do,” he told Page Six. “It wakes you up halfway through the night…physically I was a mess.”
Filth is a gritty tale of drug abuse based on the novel by Irvine Welsh, who also penned Trainspotting.
James had to film a number of intense scenes for the movie, but he always attempted to relate to his depraved persona.
“I wasn’t disturbed by anything – except there was a scene where I had to pretend to force a 15-year-old girl to give me a b**w j*b. That was absolutely harrowing to do. She wasn’t 15, she was 21, an amazing actress, but that was horrible,” he admitted to Cover Media previously.
“You try to identify what is making them behave that way. For me that was fear, and you ask yourself: What fears do I have? What would happen to me if I lost control of those fears? Would that make me insane? And it would.”
Director Jon S. Baird’s Filth, which also stars Jamie Bell and Imogen Poots, hit theaters in April.
