Hugh Jackman’s mother-in-law gets the last word in his family.
The actor is married to Deborra-Lee Furness, whose mother is Fay Duncan. Fay was honored for her work raising money for cancer research earlier this year, with Hugh on hand to pay tribute to her.
“If you are expecting an actor to suck up to his mother-in-law right now, you are absolutely right,” he joked to the audience at the 2013 Angel Ball in New York City.
Fay is president of the Fight Cancer Foundation in Australia and the annual gala is held to raise funds to support the battle against the disease.
She is so passionate about her role that Fay even raised it when Hugh told her he was going to propose to her daughter.
“She said, ‘Sit down, before I give you my blessing, you need to promise three things,” Hugh recalled.
They were to love Deborra-Lee with his whole heart for the rest of his life, never to sleep on an argument and to become patron of the Bone Marrow Donor Institute.
It seems Fay’s requests meant a great deal to Hugh. He met Deborra-Lee on the set of 1995 Australian television series Correlli and they married the following year.
They couldn’t be happier, with the actor calling his wife his dream woman and her equally gushing about him.
However, at the start the 45-year-old star worried he was moving too fast.
“I decided, I won’t ask her to marry me for six months,” he recently explained. “Then after four months I thought, that’s the most ridiculous rule!”
