Huston: Daughter loves my ‘tache

Jack Huston

Jack Huston’s moustache helped him bond with his daughter.

The star sports iconic facial hair to portray Richard Harrow in US mob drama Boardwalk Empire. At first he went down the fake route, before deciding to man up and grow his own.

“I’ve been given loads of parts because of my moustache. My fake one for Boardwalk Empire was so uncomfortable, it was easier to grow a real one – even if I do look like Tom Selleck,” he laughed to British magazine Marie Claire. “My brother said having facial hair made you more recognizable to babies, so I think it’s helped me bond with my daughter.”

Jack’s aunt is acclaimed actress Anjelica Huston, who he credits with getting him interested in movies. He recalled visiting her at work when he was little and struggling to comprehend her job.

“I went on the set of The Witches in 1990 to visit my aunt. It was Roald Dahl, it was full costume and make-up, and I was like, ‘Wow, you do this all day?’ Now we watch films together, but purely out of love, never from the pretension of being an actor,” he said.

Jack’s whole family shares a love of the industry. So much so that growing up many of his fondest memories circle around movies.

“My family used to hold a mini film festival at my aunt’s ranch. She and my uncle [actor Danny Huston] were part of the Academy, so they’d get the nominated movies before the Oscars,” he recalled. “We’d make up winners and present a sculpture made by my uncle Bob to people like Sofia Coppola and Uma Thurman. Many said it was the best award they’d been given.”
