Katie Holmes is grateful every day to call New York City “home”.
The actress has lived in Manhattan with daughter Suri, seven, ever since splitting from husband Tom Cruise in July 2012.
And according to Katie, New York has been incredibly good to her family.
“I love the community in New York. I love New Yorkers,” she told People magazine. “I ran into someone on the street the other day that I went to high school with. I love the moments of spontaneity every day. New York has been very good to both of us.”
The 35-year-old enjoys the many wonderful museums and parks the city has to offer. Katie makes a point to interact with people as much as possible while out and about.
“I love the theater, the galleries in my neighborhood. Stuff [like] that is so much of what makes me love this city. I love the Knicks. I love talking to my neighbors in the elevator. I like feeling a part of something big,” she gushed.
The Dawson’s Creek star is currently focused on her collaboration with Kohl’s department stores to educate women about breast cancer and raise money for charity Komen. Calling it the “pink elephant in the room”, Katie says being a mother has made her far more aware of health issues as a woman.
“I’ve known a lot of people who have been diagnosed and women tend to take care of everyone else before our own needs,” she said. “Becoming a parent made me much more aware of my own health. I want to be there for my child for a long time. Hopefully it will cause women to have the conversation and really support each other through prevention. It affects one in eight women and anything I can do to help I’m on board with.”
