Hanks: I love being a granddad

Tom Hanks says being a grandfather is like “parenthood fantasy camp”.

The star’s actor son Colin Hanks welcomed his second daughter with wife Samantha Bryant in July and Tom is elated about welcoming another member to the family.

The 57-year-old Oscar-winner also loves that he can spend quality time with the newborn but doesn’t get the sleepless nights his son and daughter-in-law are enduring.

“I get to do the thing of come in and have a great time for a few hours or maybe overnight on occasion, but hey, this is like… parenthood fantasy camp. You have all the fun without any of the long nights,” he confessed to Entertainment Tonight.

Tom, who first became a granddad with the birth of Colin’s two-year-old daughter Olivia, revealed the family uses the Greek names for grandfather and grandmother.

Olivia calls him “pappou”, and calls Tom’s wife, actress Rita Wilson, “yia yia”, a custom they took from Rita’s Greek relatives.

Tom also took a minute to talk to ET about his next film, Captain Phillips. The thespian takes on the lead as Captain Richard Phillips, whose cargo ship was hijacked by pirates in 2009 off the coast of Somalia.

Fortunately, he didn’t suffer much with seasickness as many of the film’s scenes were shot on the water. Tom admitted, however, that many of the crew members weren’t so lucky.

“There was one day where we lost ‘em all, just one after the other. All the crew that was inside got sick,” he said. “They got to move their eyes and they got to do stuff… When [the boat] drops that way that it does and you lose your equilibrium, one after another… they all had to dash for the hatchway.”

Captain Phillips is scheduled for US release in October.
