Lady Gaga’s performance on Saturday Night Live helped the show sustain high ratings this week.
The singer hosted the sketch comedy show for the first time and returned as a musical guest at the weekend.
Critics applauded the pop star for delivering gut-busting performance, including a spoof of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, in which Gaga played a shy, fashion-challenged Apple “Genius Bar” employee.
According to Deadline, the show averaged a 4.9/12 in metered market households.
The number reportedly matches the “season high result” of the program’s previous week, which featured host Kerry Washington and musical guest Eminem.
The show did particularly well with younger audiences. According to the outlet, Gaga’s ratings fell just short of Tina Fey and Miley Cyrus’ act as host and musical guest two weeks prior.
“In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, last night’s SNL logged a 2.6/12 in adults 18-49, also even with the Washington-Eminem episode and off a tenth this season’s high posted by the season premiere hosted by Tina Fey and the Miley Cyrus episode,” Deadline reports.
Gaga also delivered a series of energetic performances, including an opening monologue paying tribute to her hometown of New York City, in which she pandered for “cheap Applause”, and a duet with R. Kelly to the pair’s new single Do What U Want.
Gaga last week admitted she practiced emceeing the show for years in hopes she’d finally get the chance.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life. I’ve been rehearsing my SNL hosting performance since I was four, so I’m okay,” she told Access Hollywood, admitting she was looking forward to poking fun of herself on the program.
“I actually told them [the writers] to push it,” she said. “I told them to have a good time and not be worried about me being offended or not liking anything. So they really went for it.”
