Ethan Hawke worries that the days of “being able to quietly have a nervous breakdown” are over.
The 42-year-old actor appears alongside Selena Gomez, 21, in movie The Getaway. While Ethan has experience of growing up under the spotlight just like Selena, he fears young stars nowadays have things a lot harder.
“I don’t envy it at all,” he told ET Online. “I doubt anybody finds that water easy to navigate, and the whole social media element of it is just an added hurdle. It’s just like one hurdle to make it harder. The days of being able to quietly have a nervous breakdown or something and really be able to pull yourself back together without anybody paying attention are over.”
Ethan’s first major role came in 1989’s Dead Poets Society when he was 19. He went on to marry Uma Thurman in 1998 and recently admitted he was too young to fully understand their marriage vows. He tied the knot in part because he thought the union would ground him, although they split in 2003.
The actor remains philosophical about the opportunities his success has given him, some which he hopes Selena will take too.
“Selena’s similar to me in a lot of ways, which is that we’re both interested in a lot of different aspects of the performing arts, whether it’s writing or singing or acting,” he explained.
“[The industry wants] to kind of smack you around, but at the same time they’re rewarding you and it’s a very confusing moment in your life because people are telling you you’re important, and they’re talking to you about ridiculously superficial things which you know are not important.”
