Emma Thompson has joked she would become a lesbian for Sandra Bullock.
The British actress is no stranger to locking lips with a woman for her job.
She shared a kiss with Meryl Streep during a 2003 TV miniseries, previously revealing she used “tongues” while doing so.
When asked whether she has any female crushes, Emma joked about a humorous interaction she had with Sandra.
“After full-on snogging Meryl Streep in Angels in America, where do you go from there? We practically had sex, for God’s sake,” Emma laughed to American magazine Advocate. “Oh, there are so many beautiful women. Well, I met Sandy Bullock at an awards thing a couple years ago, and she said to me, ‘If I were gay, you’d be the one.’ I said, ‘I’m there!'”
Emma was previously described as “a bloke, for all intents and purposes,” with “a very blokish sense of humor” by Hugh Grant during an appearance on talk show Oprah. The pair both starred in Sense and Sensibility and Love Actually.
While she understood what he meant, Emma insists she has no male qualities and won’t change her personality for anyone.
“Look, in a sense, he was trying to express approval, but what’s wrong with being feminine? What is he actually saying? The problem is that men have extreme difficulty with powerful women, who will immediately be dubbed masculine. I don’t accept that,” she insisted.
“Yes, I’m a powerful woman, but I don’t think I’m like a man at all. I don’t want to be a man. It’s not something that any person of my gender would wish, whether lesbian or straight. We’re women. I want to be allowed to be a powerful woman without being told that means I’m like a man.”
Over the years Emma has gained a large gay following. She is thrilled to receive such positive attention and vows to be there for them too.
“Oh, and I love [my followers]. It’s a source of great pride and happiness,” she smiled. “That support is very supportive, and my support in return is so profound and real.”
