Ellen Pompeo’s Emmy slam was meant to be off the record.
The actress caused controversy when she said Sunday’s awards show was lacking in diversity and out of date.
“The Emmys felt so dated to me,” she told AP on Sunday. “That dance number was embarrassing. Did you see one person of color in that dance number?”
The 43-year-old added she is “extremely proud of our very, very diverse cast [on TV show Grey’s Anatomy], which represents the world that I walk around in every day.”
But during an appearance on program Watch What Happens Live, Ellen insisted the comments were meant to be off the record. Although she is standing by her statement, Ellen added that her team is investigating the matter.
Ellen also revealed that she prefers kissing her co-star Patrick Dempsey to Chris O’Donnell, who was also on the show, and is still very good friends with ex-castmate Katherine Heigl.
Sunday’s show had two dance numbers. One featured Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion, Sarah Silverman and the Emmys Gold Dancers. The second was an interpretive dance number by the nominees for Best Choreography.
Grey’s Anatomy has won five Emmy Awards so far and the tenth season of the show will air this Thursday in the US.
