Idris Elba “never” wants to flip his car again.
The 41-year-old Mandela star lost contact with a gravel road behind the wheel in Finland while filming a racing documentary for BBC2.
Although he escaped injury, the moment the wheels flew off the roadway is emblazoned in his mind.
“I never want to do that again. It’s the first time that I have ever rolled a car,” he told UK newspaper The Sun.
Idris remembers the event in shocking detail. It wasn’t until he went over an embankment that he realized how dire the situation was and he still can’t believe it happened.
“I wasn’t going fast, the car just had a mind of its own when it hit the bank,” he recalled. “I cut the corner and then we rolled. Suddenly it all came together.”
The documentary moved forward with production.
As The Sun reports, it sees Idris discussing his lifetime love for fast driving, and shows him recalling how he bought his first car illegally at age 14 – a move he got away with because he looked years older.
“It was a Mini Clubman. To buy a car at 14 you must have facial hair because when you have facial hair at 14 people don’t ask your age! I’m not proud of it but, for me, it’s where it all began,” he says.
Idris Elba: King of Speed is scheduled to air December 26 and 27 in the UK.
