Zac Efron views Tom Cruise as a mentor.
The 26-year-old Neighbors star shot to fame at an early age, much like Tom, who became a household name at the age of 21 when his hit flick Risky Business was released in 1983.
Zac wasn’t even born when Tom became an international sensation, and he looks to the veteran actor for advice quite often.
“I won’t talk specifically about those conversations but I think they were pretty candid and common sense driven,” the former High School Musical star told news.com.au.
“You have to be aware — and I am — of who you are and what you bring to the table and even more importantly how you are perceived.
“You really have to take into account what your place is, how you can shape that to what you want it to be in the future and what the steps are to get there.”
Zac visited rehab last year to treat narcotics abuse issues and last week in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the star revealed he has been regularly seeing a therapist and attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
Although the heartthrob is considered one of the most attractive men in Hollywood, settling down and starting a family is the furthest thing from his mind.
“Some day, perhaps. I mean, my dad said [having kids] was nice. But I am not thinking that far ahead right now,” Zac said.
Neighbors, a comedy also starring Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen, reaches theaters this weekend.
