Zac Efron reportedly took a sober coach to the Oscars.
Last year it was revealed the 26-year-old actor had secretly sought help in rehab, reported to be for substance abuse.
He was one of many stars who attended Sunday night’s Academy Awards in Los Angeles and apparently took steps to ensure he stayed on track during the festivities.
“Zac had a sober coach with him the entire time he was at Dolby to monitor what he was doing and to make sure he didn’t partake in any substances like drugs or alcohol,” a source told RadarOnline.com.
“The coach was there to escort him to the bathroom or backstage, anywhere he needed to be where temptation might arise.”
Zac was in good spirits on the red carpet at the event, where he wore a simple black suit and matching skinny tie. He discussed who he hoped would pick up the best actor prize, citing Matthew McConaughey – who received the gong for his portrayal of AIDS sufferer Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club.
“[I'm] partial to Matthew McConaughey,” he told Ryan Seacrest for E! News.
“I worked with him on Paper Boy and he’s such a great guy and his career has taken such an interesting turn and I know it comes from a really honest, hunger-driven place. I really admire him and look up to him.”
Zac’s latest release is That Awkward Moment, about three guys who are battling the pitfalls of relationships.
It was while promoting the film on US TV that Zac first publicly spoke about his rehab experience, after being taken aback by a question about his sobriety battle.
“I’m in the best place I’ve ever been. I’ve never been this happy before. I’m extraordinarily grateful for these guys and to be here promoting this movie. I don’t know. Things are good. I don’t know. Thank you for asking,” he said on the Today show.
