Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson says he “was crying constantly” while battling depression.
The 42-year-old movie star was once an aspiring football player looking to play for the NFL.
But when he didn’t make the draft and was dropped from a professional Canadian team that paid him very little, Dwayne admits he was emotionally shattered.
“I didn’t want to do a thing,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “I didn’t want to go anywhere. I was crying constantly.”
Dwayne revealed he moved to Miami, Florida after his football career fell apart.
Unfortunately, the relocation was equally psychologically damaging, as his upset with life led to a brief separation from his first wife Dany Martinez.
“I looked in my pocket, and I had seven bucks. Wow. Seven bucks to my name,” he detailed.
“The dreams I had, they’re dashed. There is no more football. My relationship was crushed. That was my absolute worst time.”
Ultimately Dwayne and Dany divorced in 2008 after being married for a decade, a split that served as a rude awakening.
“Once I manned up and became accountable for the mess I was in, that’s when it all hit me,” he explained. “Failing at marriage and as a husband was a heavy thing, and divorce had that special way of knocking me on my a**.”
Dwayne is grateful for the trials he’s experienced, however. He says his past sorrow offers him an expanded perspective on life.
“I grew up where, when a door closed, a window didn’t open,” he said. “The only thing I had was cracks. I’d do everything to get through those cracks – scratch, claw, bite, push, bleed. Now the opportunity is here. The door is wide open and it’s as big as a garage.”
