Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs denies he turned down American Idol after discovering Jennifer Lopez had signed onto the series.
The rapper famously dated JLo from 1999 to 2001 and although they have remained friends, recent reports suggest some awkwardness may still remain.
According to Us Weekly, Diddy “was in contention for the third spot on American Idol’s season 13 judging panel” but that all changed when Jennifer began to finalize her deal to return to the program.
A source told the tabloid that the hip-hop star also turned down the opportunity due to his history with Jennifer’s manager Benny Medina.
The high-powered Hollywood executive once represented Diddy but the pair parted ways “several years ago”, according to the insider.
“[Diddy] felt it was a ‘her or me’ situation,” the source explained.
A spokesperson for the music mogul has slammed the allegations, calling them simply “not true”.
Diddy previously appeared as a guest mentor on Idol in 2011 but the segment was pre-recorded and he didn’t have any contact with the Live It Up singer, who served as a judge in 2011 and 2012.
JLo, 44, is believed to be in the final stages of contract negotiations and will join Keith Urban as a judge on the forthcoming season.
Producers are still looking to fill the third and final slot after judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson revealed they would be stepping away from their roles.
Kanye West is said to have recently turned down an offer, reportedly fearing it would damage his reputation.
Us Weekly reports Rodney Jerkins and Black Eyed Peas singer-and-producer will.i.am are being considered.
The 13th season of American Idol is currently in pre-production and will premiere in January 2014.
