Diane Keaton wishes she had “bought a man in her life”.
The star and single mother – who famously dated Woody Allen and Warren Beatty in the past – feels that she’s failed at settling down. The 68-year-old big screen actress wishes things could have been different, especially for the sake of her two children, Dexter, 18, and Duke, 13.
“It’s not the worst tragedy. But I really wish I had bought myself a man! A good man who would be a great father, I really do. I think it’s a better way to go
“I think I was not practical,” Diane tells People Magazine. “I had some insane idea that I had to be ‘in love’. Now I see what it really takes: real consideration that you’re a good team together.”
The actress, who is promoting her second memoir, Let’s Just Say It Wasn’t Pretty, also dished on some of her past ex-boyfriends and relationships, including her Godfather co-star Al Pacino, who she dated for five years. Diane wanted to take their relationship to the next step, but he was less than enthusiastic about her plans.
“But he was even less inclined to be realistic than me,” Diane shared. “And I was on the cusp of being very old. So that poor guy. I don’t think he was really that interested. And I don’t think a long-term happy marriage would be easy for him.”
Despite never settling down in Hollywood, Diane hasn’t ruled out a future relationship. “But I can’t imagine it,” she adds. “You have to put yourself out there, and that’s really hard for me. Always was.”
Let’s Say It Wasn’t Pretty is due in bookstores this Tuesday.
