Defensive Daniel Radcliffe

Daniel Radcliffe has a huge “chip on his shoulder”.

The British actor rose to fame after landing the titular role in the Harry Potter films when he was just 11.

While he has now moved on from the wizard franchise, the 24-year-old star admits for a long time he felt he had to prove his acting skills. He was also paranoid people thought he wasn’t worthy of landing successful roles.

“I have a massive chip on my shoulder,” he admitted to US newspaper New York Times. “When you fall into something at age 11 and get paid incredible amounts of money for your entire teenage years for doing a job anyone would want, there is a part of you that thinks everybody is just saying, ‘He got there because he fell into it; he’s not really an actor.’”

Daniel has since become more confident in himself but it didn’t happen overnight. It was a long while until he realized he no longer had to demonstrate his talent.

“I feel it less nowadays. It has taken a long time to feel like I’ve earned the place that I’m at,” he added.

Because he entered the industry at a young age Daniel does feel he missed out on a normal childhood and enjoying his teenage years. He moved out into his own place when he was just 17 as he felt mature enough to live by himself and didn’t want to be held back by his parents.

“I didn’t have that normal teenage period when you build up your friends in your area and you have a social circle,” he recalled. “Because of the life I’ve had, I’d grown up quicker than most people. I felt like I was entitled [to live by myself]. I can be honest about this now, because I know my parents know – but I wanted to smoke. I was hiding it like a fiend.”
