Chilli: Usher love was real

Usher was Chilli’s first “real love”.

The R&B star dated the 42-year-old TLC singer, real name Rozonda Thomas, for two years and their breakup is widely thought to have been the inspiration for his 2004 record Confessions.

The album includes tracks about being unfaithful, leading many to believe that is why Usher and Chilli split. Although she has previously claimed he did cheat, now the singer is setting the record straight.

“We were together when he recorded that album,” she told Us Weekly. “All of those songs on Confessions, that was about [Usher's producer] Jermaine Dupri’s situation. Usher was just singing it. But people kind of bought into it, it was just the timing of our breakup when the album came out.

“So people assumed that album was about us, but it was not. And Usher and I weren’t oil and water. We broke up because I guess it was that time or whatever… he was that real love for me.”

Although they have been apart for around a decade, Chilli insists she still has love for Usher, 35. Initially she thought they would be together for the rest of their lives and even though that didn’t happen she remains philosophical about the romance.

“In any relationship, even when it came to my relationship with Usher, when it was time to make a move, I had to do that,” she said. “I don’t care how much my heart was hurting, sometimes you’re just supposed to be with people for a reason and it’s not always a lifetime. Even if you want it to be, it just doesn’t work out that way.

“But I’ll always love him, forever, because he was my first adult love, a real love.”
