Cher swayed by own album

Cher admits even she “isn’t a Cher fan”.

The 67-year-old singer has a new record out called Closer to the Truth, which comes 12 years after her previous release. The star was convinced she was done with music and remains astounded she has scored chart success at her age.

“I just never thought I’d make another record. I just didn’t think about it. I thought it was too late and I was done with music,” she told British newspaper The Sun.

“But then my manager said I should have another go. I was singing really well, so I thought, ‘I’ll start it and see what happens,’ and here we are… Even now I’m not a Cher fan but I really like this album.”

The star might be unsure of her vocal talent, but she has more fans now than ever. She is particularly touched by those who have stuck with her through her whole career, citing a 90-year-old woman who insisted the only proper way to celebrate her birthday would be at a Cher gig.

The star prides herself on keeping up with new music trends and worked with stars such as Pink on her album. She is a massive fan of the younger singer’s spunky attitude, calling her “my kind of woman”.

As much as she enjoyed discussing her record, Cher also wants to put the spotlight on causes she is passionate about. Women’s rights are something she promotes and she is passionate about fighting for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community too. In line with that, she has slammed the recent anti-gay propaganda law in Russia.

“People are committing suicide because they are gay. That’s wrong. I have Russian friends, I’ve been to Russia. I was going to go to the Winter Olympics next year but now it’s so crazy there, I’m not going. I’m boycotting it. I’m an American, so I get to speak out. F**k them,” she said.

“The last time I went to Russia, everything was moving forward, but this just seems to have broken it… We need to stand up and fight. I will never stop fighting for the truth.”
