Charlize Theron doesn’t think people should be envious of her life.
The stunning South African-American actress is often regarded as one of the most beautiful women in the world, and is currently dating Sean Penn.
Her successful movie career has bagged her a best actress Oscar as well as countless other awards and accolades, but Charlize insists that there are parts of her life that aren’t desirable.
“Oh, I’m sure there’s a lot of aspects to my life that a lot of people wouldn’t want,” Charlize mused to the British edition of Esquire magazine.
“Just personal choice things. Like the fact that I’m single at 38. That’s not necessarily what a lot of women want. I mean unmarried. But I’m just saying; a life is good if it’s the life that you want.”
Charlize is the proud mother of two-year-old Jackson, whom she adopted in 2012. Although she doesn’t think her life is perfect, Charlize is more than happy with her lot.
“I am living my life in a way that if tomorrow it ended – and I hope not because I have a kid – but if it did, this was the life that I really wanted to live. But I work at that, you know?” she said.
“Here’s the one thing I’ll give you. If you do go through any severe trauma, if you are put in a situation where you understand that it very easily could have gone the other way, you realize very quickly the value of life. That becomes very, very clear. I learned it at a very young age.”
Charlize grew up with an alcoholic and abusive father, Charles, who would physically attack his family. In 1991 after assaulting Charlize’s mother Gerda, Gerda shot and killed Charles.
As well a tough family life, Charlize was also shaped by the political unrest in her native South Africa.
“I was raised in an environment where our country was heading towards civil war. There was violence, there was an Aids epidemic. There were a lot of things reminding me, constantly, of my mortality,” she explained.
Now she chooses to seize the life she has, and doesn’t let the world pass her by.
