Charlie Hunnam was “all smiles” over the weekend, after pulling out of Fifty Shades of Grey.
The actor has confirmed he will not portray Christian Grey in the highly-anticipated adaptation of E.L. James’ raunchy book, after he was announced as the lead last month.
Despite the change, the 33-year-old couldn’t have looked happier as he attended a wedding over the weekend. He looked on as celebrity publicist Jennifer Betts tied the knot with Ryan Conroy in Santa Barbara, with claims he was involved in the wedding party.
An onlooker told E! News Charlie was “all smiles” during the ceremony and led a toast to the happy couple later in the day.
It has been claimed that the actor’s schedule is to blame for his decision not to continue with the Fifty Shades of Grey movie.
“The filmmakers of Fifty Shades of Grey and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey,” Universal Pictures and Focus Features said in a statement.
Charlie plays the lead role in US TV show Sons of Anarchy, which could be why he wouldn’t have enough time for the release.
His casting was met with outrage by some fans, who claimed he wasn’t attractive enough to play the billionaire with a sexy secret.
It’s been suggested Charlie wasn’t always wholly sold on the character anyway and might have rethought things after realizing the huge impact the film would have on his life.
“This isn’t a surprise because what he was taking on with this role was not what Charlie wants in his future career,” a source told E!
“The attention and the pressure was intense. More than anything he hates attention and being in Fifty Shades of Grey would force him to do lots of media.”
E.L. took to Twitter shortly after the announcement, saying she wished Charlie nothing but the best.
Dakota Johnson has been lined up as the female lead naive Anastasia Steele, who falls in love with Christian.
At the moment it’s thought Matt Bomer is the mostly likely to take on Charlie’s old role.
