Celebrities March on Washington

Jamie Foxx

Jamie Foxx calls on entertainers to “renew” Martin Luther King’s dream.

The Academy-Award winning actor attended a 50th anniversary commemoration event for the late activist on Wednesday.

Citing recent racially related American controversies such as the Trayvon Martin case, Jamie asked his colleagues to use their success to stand up for civil rights.

“All the entertainers, it is time for us to stand up now and renew this dream,” Jamie said to the crowd.

“What we need to do now is the young folks pick it up now, so that when we’re 87 years old, talking to the young folks, we can say it was me, Will Smith, Jay Z, Kanye, Alicia Keys, Kerry Washington, the list goes on and on.”

The ceremony celebrated King’s revolutionary I Have a Dream speech, which he delivered on August 28, 1963 to 250,000 Americans who took part in the March on Washington at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. The activists banded together to fight for equality for African-Americans and other minorities.

Jaime’s fellow entertainers Oprah Winfrey, LeAnn Rimes and Forest Whitaker also took part in the commemoration alongside former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter.

During a poignant speech Oprah recalled her reaction to King’s March on Washington, which took place when she was nine-years-old.

“I asked my mama, ‘Can I go to the march?’ It took me 50 years, but I’m here,” she declared.

“[This event is] an opportunity today to recall where we once were in this nation. [Martin Luther King forced America] to wake up, look at itself and eventually change.”

TMZ reports shortly after the event Martin Luther King’s surviving relatives, including his grandchildren and siblings, were involved in an auto accident just outside the memorial.

According to the website, a van ran through a red light and collided with the charter bus.

No one was seriously injured but the driver was taken to hospital.

Late Green Mile actor Michael Clarke Duncan’s partner Omarosa Manigault was also travelling on the family’s vehicle at the time and she tweeted about the crash: “Yikes just got banged up a lil bit on bus- I am ok! #HitMyHead ouch”.
