Drew Barrymore thinks “there are no rules” when it comes to family.
The 39-year-old actress is currently promoting her latest film, Blended, in which she plays a recently divorced mum-of-two. In real life, Drew is happily married to husband Will Kopelman and she gave birth to her second daughter Frankie last month.
“I think there are no rules. I think of family as where you feel safe,” she told Variety. “It’s where you feel supported, and it’s where people are being deathly honest with you.”
Drew had a turbulent childhood and home life which included alcohol and drug abuse from a very young age. When she was just 16-years-old, she filed a successful juvenile court petition for emancipation from her parents and moved into her own apartment. Yet while her relationship with her biological family faltered, Drew found strength and love in her own blended family.
“I think that my family looks traditional from the outside,” she added, “But I also know that I had kind of ‘zero-point-zero’ family growing up, and it was my friends that became my family and they gave me a sense of place in the world and they gave me tough love.”
The Never Been Kissed actress couldn’t be happier with her life at the moment thanks to her two little girls, Frankie, and 19-month-old Olive. She previously admitted a sibling for her eldest daughter was her top priority as it was something she could have benefited from growing up.
“[I wanted Olive] to have a sibling, because I really would have liked that in my life,” she told People magazine. “Olive loves Frankie and just wants to hang out with her all the time. She wants to feed her. She’s super into it. That’s now. I’m sure things will ebb and flow.”
