Alicia Keys and her family are “grounded”.
The American singer is married to hip hop artist Swizz Beatz, real name Kasseem David Dean, and the pair welcomed their son Egypt in October 2010.
She enjoys venturing out with them in public, but is rarely snapped by paparazzi during their trips. Alicia believes this is because of her relaxed outlook on fame and insists she doesn’t feel the need to gain attention from onlookers.
“We’re very grounded and we really like being in and of the people in a very real way. So we’re not really going to the ‘spots’… and you know, now let’s go to the ‘spot’… OK, you dressed up, you look nice, because now we’re going to the ‘spot’… so it’s kinda like…” she laughed to CBS News.
The 32-year-old star recently completed her role as executive producer on upcoming drama film The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete. The movie follows two young boys as they are left to look after themselves over summer, following the arrest of their mothers.
Alicia was immediately interested in the feature and felt at one with the characters during filming.
“I was drawn in instantly just by reading the piece and I was attached to each character and I felt their pain, and I felt their triumph,” she added.
She also found the concept of having each boy from a different background, one being black and another Asian, an original idea. She feels this added touch makes it easier for audiences to relate to.
“I loved that. The fact that it’s a global story – it’s a human story,” she explained. “So no matter the location of where we are, where we live, whatever the case, it’s a story about two boys bonding together to make it through a very tough time. And somehow, it ends up being hilarious. Sometimes you’re… somehow you’re laughing with them. And you’re rooting for them.”
